Stop Advertising at Me

“Successful companies in social media function more like entertainment companies, publishers, or party planners than as traditional advertisers.” - Erik Qualman

Companies who don't "get" advertising through social media need to stop.

This isn't the same as TV, billboards, radio, or even Youtube.  Shoving your stuff in my face, and begging me to buy something, doesn't work here.  Just look at your engagement numbers. Compared to what you could achieve even five years ago, they're pitiful.

Stop advertising.  Stop selling.  Start giving.  I would love to hear your stories, but I have no time or interest in being talked at.

Use social media as an individual would.  Give us something.  Bleed a little.  Take a hint from the fact that most social media platforms call re-posting content "sharing".  Sharing and giving are synonyms in social media.

Start making your advertising a product that I want to come back for, instead of something I ignore.
